The smokey eye look is not only suitable for the carnival craze but also for other special occasions. Smokey eye make-up goes with many different hairstyles.

A brief history of smokey eyes

Do you know when smokey eyes came into being? Well, the concept for such make-up was invented in the 1920s. Interestingly, the originator of smokey make-up is considered to be Maximilian Faktor a.k.a. Faktorowicz, born in Zduńska Wola, Polish-Jewish manufacturer and inventor of cosmetics, and founder of the well-known and respected company Max Factor.

Factor moved to the United States at a young age, and there his career as a makeup artist and cosmetics manufacturer gained incredible momentum. Among other things, Max worked on some of Hollywood’s biggest productions, collaborating with prominent stars of the time.

How did he come up with the idea of smokey eyes? He wanted to give actresses’ eyes more expression and depth, so he started doing strong eye makeup. He focused most on highlighting the frame of the eye, using for this purpose kajal, a cosmetic known mainly in the Middle East, used as substitute for eye shadow, crayon or eyeliner. Eye makeup done this way contrasted spectacularly with the pale skin of the actresses. The smokey eye trend began to conquer the hearts of women around the world and is still one of the most popular ways to apply eye makeup.

How to create smokey eyes? Step-by-step instructions

For many women getting the smokey eye effect seems difficult to achieve. Believe me, ladies, with a little practice and a few basic steps you’ll be a smokey eye master!

Step 1

How do I start with smokey eyes? Apply the smokey eye base thoroughly to your upper and lower eyelids as it will make your evening make-up look more intense and long-lasting. Then, without skipping the inner corners of your eye, apply the pearly white pigment all over your upper eyelid. It is best to apply this cosmetic with a small, flat brush.

Step 2

After applying the pigment on your eyelid, use a small, fluffy brush to apply a dark grey pigment from the same series as the pearl white pigment in the outer corner of your eye. Remember to apply the most intense color at the lash line, it should diffuse gently into the crease of the eyelid.

Step 3

The next step to achieving the perfect smokey eyes is to use a black gel eyeliner. A small, oblong brush works best for this step. Remember that the line in the inner corner should be thin and thicken towards the outer corner of the eye. Finish with a sharp point and pull upwards firmly.

Step 4

How to start painting the lower lash line? With a small and sharply pointed brush apply the already used pearl white pigment from the inner corner to the middle of the eyelid. The outer corner of the eye with a dark gray pigment. This will emphasize the lash line and give depth to the look.

Step 5

This is the real icing on the cake – masking the eyelashes. It is best to use a long-lasting mascara which lengthens, thickens and curls them. It is important that the cosmetic does not stick the hair around the eyes. You can also stick on false eyelashes on a strip or clumps. Ladies who are having a permanent lash thickening treatment can skip this step.

Step 6

Finally, color the eyebrows with a slanted brush and gel liner. The hairs have to be perfectly combed and arranged. And you’re done! Are you smokey-eyed and in awe of yourself? This is a sign that you have achieved the desired effect.

A sensual, timeless makeup look

Smoky eyes makeup is a very seductive and sensual makeup. Many people associate it mainly with special occasions or evening out, but we often forget that smokey eye doesn’t have to be just makeup done with dark shadows. Remember that you can also opt for a softer version of smokey eyes, one for everyday wear. To create it we need brown shades, which will replace the classic black. Of course, we can modify smokey eyes according to our own taste, playing with colors! This is especially allowed during carnival season.

Isn’t it true that this eye makeup is not so difficult?
